This excellent trekking itinerary takes one into the pristine high valleys of the Garhwal Himalaya. Har-ki-dun is derived from a Hindi word meaning God's valley. How true this place is to its name, which is experienced on the trek in the backdrop of the Himalaya presenting a heavenly sight. This is one of the easier treks of two valleys and can be done together or separately. This trek gives enough time to appreciate the wild roses and irises, chestnut, sycamore and deodar trees plus bamboo, which line the trail. The trek is amid alpine pasture, where you may occasionally encounter rare Himalayan birds like the Paradise Fly Catcher, Fork Tail Fly Catcher and Monal; it is indeed one of the most popular treks in Garhwal. The trail passes through villages with traditional buildings and lush green terraced mountain fields. There are villagers working in their potato fields, herding their sheep in to the jungle, in their traditional dresses, which is a rare and wonderful sight in our modern age. From the beautiful Har-ki-dun valley, we move ahead for Ruinsara Tal (lake) and the base of black peak and Swargarohini Mountain. This Valley is also known for its polyandrous family system. Here two or more than two brothers can have one common wife. |
